And The "Dipshit Of The Year" Award Goes To…

Andrew Speaker. And you’d think the fact that he’s a lawyer would be enough. But it was visiting half a dozen countries while carrying an untreatable, infectious disease in his system that garnered him this honor.

Now everyone who was in Speaker’s immediate proximity on all those international flights will probably be tested for a drug-resistant form of tuberculosis. And all because Speaker decided to travel to a wedding overseas against doctors’ orders.

Is this guy a dick or what?

Speaker maintains that he didn’t realize this untreatable plague he's carrying was that serious, as his doctors did not expressly forbid him from flying. Somehow this reminds me of when Paris Hilton blamed her handlers for not telling her she wasn’t supposed to violate her DUI-related probation.

I think Speaker’s most consequential offense is giving al-Qaeda (or however you spell that this week) a great idea on how to create terror via aircraft. No hijacking. No explosions. Just infect someone with a communicable disease and have them fly all over the world. They wouldn’t even have to be sneaky about this; if some of these militants will readily blow themselves to smithereens, I don’t see them having a problem with getting sick for their “cause.”

Remember, AIDS (which is communicable in a different way than TB) was allegedly spread around the world by a Canadian flight attendant. Someone is bound to use commercial aviation as a way to spread terror in a way that metal detectors, passports and background checks won’t prevent.

My advice to the DOJ: Forget animal rights groups and environmentalists – charge Speaker as a terrorist.

right on bogs! uber-dick. mega dick

this guy passes the bar but doesnt comprehend the most elementary concept of consideration for others?

but what about the other TB guy who flew here from russia after failing to complete his TB treatment thus creating a stronger more reslient strain. he's locked up in quarantine in arizona. I support it. but others are saying its wrong to imprison a non criminal. im with you..it is a kind of terrorism, and criminal.

i hadnt thought about the terrorist angle but i bet theyre working on it right now.

but who in their right mind wants to had this joker his glittering award???

she - we will mail him his award and watch his acceptance speech by video link... it's the only safe way...

when I first heard about this I thought it was that same Arizona case, which I heard about earlier... then I realized it was another... I support compulsory quarantine for both... they lock up HIV+ patients who continue to knowingly have unprotected sex, too... I support that as well... it's attempted murder as far as I am concerned...

The only thing wrong with this blog is that you have awarded "Dipshit of the Year" thereby guarenteeing someone, somewhere will do his/her best to beat this guy!

what i don't get is .... ummmm ... speaker's father-in-law is a microbiologist @ the CDC who specializes in the spread of TB!!! and CDC officials knew he was infected before he even left the USA!

ok. so ... big deal if he was a carrier. lotsa people are carriers of TB. so what. it just means he tested positive. any one who has ever been immunized against TB will likely test positive.

but ... to actually have scarring on the lungs ... like, indicating pathogens actively @ work. that's different. this speaker, he wasn't just a carrier ... and the experts knew it. that blows my mind.

one wonders what, exactly, the 'officials' @ CDC were doing ... it certainly seems they were NOT looking out for the public interest.

like she, i had not considered the terrorist angle. and i suspect 'they' are working on something much better than TB ...

quarantining, of course sounds logical. but one wonders of the value of quarantining people long after the disease has begun manifesting itself via symptoms and treatment has commenced. and who knows how long ago he got infected? aye ... there's the rub.

i think speaker's most consequential offense is demonstrating to wannabee terrorists how easy it still is to slip past all the checks the various protection agencies have in place to prevent just this thing from occurring. for instance, he has shown how useless no-fly orders seem ... particularly when no one but issuing agencies/officials seem aware of said orders.

scary~all the implications of this case~scary.

onandon - thank ya kindly!

red - if there's potential for people to unintentionally infect others with a dangerous disease, it's sad to say that some evil human being somewhere is already looking at a way to use that as a weapon intentionally... like biological and chemical weapons... "how can I use this to hurt others?" I do think Speaker's willful act is criminal... I'm not buying his excuses...

she - maybe we should whack Speaker with a fire extinguisher(?) and see if he continues to run around with his head hanging on and squirting a milky substance?
