Say Hello To My Little Friend (UPDATED)

Every day a small bird lands on my balcony and starts singing away. I enjoy hearing him as I type at my computer just a few feet away, and I believe he's a sign of good things to come.

He looks to be a male House Finch, so I've dubbed him "Finchy." (Online maps don't show this species in my part of the country, but Florida-specific bird books do list them.)

I snapped this picture of Finchy clandestinely, because he flies away when he spots me (I wonder if he's afraid my camera will steal his spirit?). He seems to be able to turn his head almost 180 degrees, so he's hard to sneak up on.

So tell me, dear reader, do you have a person, place or thing in your life like Finchy?

Another quick shot of Finchy, this time enjoying his new feeder.

OMG, that is so weird. I am posting today about the mourning dove that sets up shop in a flower basket on my balcony a couple times a year to lay her eggs!! I just call her "Momma."

Finchy has already been here a couple of times today, and is singing to me right now... I may get a feeder for him... it's only right to offer your guests something, no?

Excellent! Give my regards to Finchy!

I am jealous though - you have sunshine! We are drowning in rain out here in California.

How is my post cynical?

You live in a red state, you live in an apt. where tenants usually opt for the cat instead of a dog as a pet.

So it is most probable that you live near a cat loving conservative.

I would call myself observant

oh and to answer your topic

A spider that I feed regularly, his name is Herman, and he enjoys bees butterflies and grasshoppers.or anything with wings.LOL

maybe cynical was the wrong word... pessimistic is probably a better... this is one of the complexes in town that actually allows big dogs... there was a woman brushing her teeth today(?) while walking her weimaraner... I've seen goldens, shephards and assorted mutts around... cats are pretty crafty, and there are some around, but I've yet to see one makes its way to my 2nd floor balcony... again, I think they know better than to mess with my "friends"

Yes and no. There's a species of bird that lives up north (,ight be around here too, but haven't heard them) that I remember from when I was a kid. When I would be at my grandparents place, I would wake up early in the mornign, go outside, and hear them sing. Whenever I hear them, I am content.

But I still don't know what kind of birds they are.

well we used to feed rainbow lorikeets on our verranda honey water... fed the cockatoos, kookaburas and galas seed etc when they came around...
and those red-back spiders we sometimes kept...

the best to approach a bird is head on - toward their beak... then stop when the turn their head to look at you.

flab - when I was young I used to hear this mysterious, plaintive sound outdoors... I was in my 30s before I could connect it to anything; it was a mourning dove... they sound a bit like an ocarina, come to think of it...

fatty - Finchy's always facing away from the balcony, so no way to approach him head-on without a ladder or scissor-lift...

Lorikeets, galahas (not John Howard hehe),rosellas, peewees, sparrows,Indian doves, topknots, wattle birds, honeyeaters (blue-eyed and lewins),magpies, kookaburras, willy wagtails, currawongs, silvery-eyes,and sometimes sea-gulls (but we don't encourage them).
Is that enough?
Apparently if you feed the lorikeets too much seed they get sick so you have to make sure they have native flowers as well to balance their diet. The galahs can eat your verandah and house if they become too prolific.
Nice to see a little bit of where you live.
Cheers

I set up a feeder for Finchy earlier today... he came by after about 15 minutes and dug in... he's been back a few times, sometimes just to sing... he brought a female companion (house finch - all brown, no red) with him to dinner, too! glad to see he's sharing a nest with someone...

Aunt B - that's my wristband for St. Paddy's Day... it was essentially my admission/re-admission handstamp for the pub...

When will you change pictures? You should do it every month! So March was a St. Patricks day theme... now we need one of you holding a big easter egg shaped like a beer?

We have some piping shrikes (like magpies) that warble & taunt my dogs - but they sound so beautiful.

Other than that I have a songbird who never stops (I wish she would sometimes) and a boy with random musical tastes lol

I like this post. Really do, Pete.

Luv seein' yore birds, Bawgs. May be a nest nearby?

Pete Bogs said...

there's a large tree across the parking lot, and I know I've heard Finchy singing from there...

Jack K. said...

It was probably a wise move not to use filler flash. Finchy could have been scared off. That would have been a bummer.

On behalf of Finchy, thanks for the great food bar.
