Reply Upon Receipts

On a recent foray to buy some birthday presents, I was reminded of an alarming trend at retail stores: The fast-growing dimensions of your everyday paper receipt.

Receipts are literally getting out of hand, as they're now too big to hold in just one hand. They’re getting wider and longer, and it doesn’t make a difference if you’re only buying one item and/or paying cash.

Note the sizes in the following pictures, as compared to US nickles and pennies, and Irish euros.

Exhibit A : One item totaling $1.06 cash, approx. dimensions 4.5”x12"

Exhibit B: One item totaling $13.64 cash, approx. dimensions 3.125"x14.875"

Where once you got the total purchase amount and maybe the date on a receipt, now they have surveys and contests in English, Spanish and Sanscrit. I imagine crossword puzzles, horoscopes and a Page 3 Girl can’t be far off.

For this trees are being chopped down? I just need a handy little piece of paper, not the Magna Carta or Dead Sea Scrolls.

hahahahaha! yeah. this IS an irritant. along with blister packed anything and aspirin bottles you can't open, especially when your head is banging.
have you ever resorted to beating open a bottle with a hammer? how's finchy?

Yikes - you should put a warning on that Page 3 girl shit! :) I clicked on it and thank god no one in my office noticed! Ha!

k9 - I get these blades for my electric razor that are in a blister pack that's encased between two thick pieces of cardboard which are, no joke, fastened together at the corners by metal rings... it's Fort Knox for your face...

the receipts are out of hand... I understand the aspirin, having been through the old Tylenol scare of '82... that's when all the extra safety packaging started...

finchy's doing well, and eating well... no other type of bird has been by, curiously...

libana - sorry, I thought everyone knew about the Page 3 Girl from the British paper, The Sun... it's part of popular culture, even in the States... I take full responsibility for linking to it without warning...

(I didn't people really followed the links...)

Not sure if you have the AutoZone auto parts chain stores where you live Bogs but their receipts are the LONGEST I am talking two three or even four feet long, without a coupon selection on the reverse side.

To bad LB. It must be a guy thing, because I fully expected to see what I did. Didn't stay long though. Perhaps later today. Hmmm.

As for receipts. Arrrrggh. I agree with you bogs. There must be a way to change the trend. I wonder what would happen if we stuffed them into post free envelopes and sent them to someone else.

I could only send the cash receipts because we track our credit purchases that way.

Just a thought.

we do have AutoZone here, but I haven't been there in a while... Best Buy (not shown) and Circuit City are competing here for the most ridiculously long receipts... BB also asks half a dozen questions... but that's for another blog...

Next shopping trip arm your self with a pair of scissors. Wait for your receipt. Trim off all the excess crap and politely decline to leave the store with it. Request that it be destroyed in your presence so that none of your data can be stolen. You might offer the cashier your scissors if they don't have a shredder.
I imagine stores will get the idea once their register lines start clogging with people snipping up their receipts. The only downside is that Homeland Security will probably arrest you for carrying scissors...but then again they've been listening to your calls and reading your mail so they probably have enough to "Guantanamo" you already.

maybe Homeland Security does have a hand in all those questions... it is basically an interogation...

save the trees! or at least save my sanity... its hard to fold up massive recipts to put in your wallet when your balancing bags and goods and wallets are the same time.

Pres B, nifty idea. If you use the plastic scissors made specifically for tots, then you should be able to get by security.

Ever try to punch a hole in paper with scissors with rounded ends? Tough to do, but a four year old with nothing better to do can probably get the job done. But, that is another story.

Let's go get some tacos said...

i know! so ridiculous.
